Though the tradition of dueling shields stretches back to the Crusader states, nowadays it is much more commonly associated with medieval Germany. The shapes and styles of these shields varied immensely; from simple longshields, to the much more complicated type sometimes called a throated hooking shield. This particular piece is on the more specialized end of the spectrum. Wielded alongside a sword or wooden mace, the manuals depict this shield being used solely for judicial combat. The four hooks would be used to grapple the opponents weapons or limbs, while a pair of spearheads at either end could be used to finish the job.

The body of this shield is 1/2” thick hardwood plywood, while the trough styled boss is 3/4” pine. A sturdy poplar pole handle rounds out its robust design. In place of lethal spearheads, rubber bumpers are affixed to either end. Be warned, this thing is HEAVY. Even with blunted tips and body armor, a weapon this immense can easily break bones. Intended for technique drills or very light sparring only. 24” wide and 7’ tall overall.

Historical representations show these shields being almost universally painted white with a red cross running the length of the shield. Ours come painted blank white, to allow for personalization.
